Greater than one weekI ordered these recently as I smoke in my home and want to protect my HVAC system. Immediately after installing these filters my heating and AC in my home was much less effective. My heater actually stopped working and I had to call a technician out to find out what the issue is. After the technician looked over my HVAC system (its a large TRANE system only 4 years old) he said the problem is that the filters, and im quoting him, Work too well. The filters completely cut off the air flow to my HVAC system and it was trying to pull in air from the attic to compensate which damaged one of the switches. Thankfully the replacement switch was only $25 to get my HVAC system working again, however the technician said that he sees this issue a lot with the fancy filters and suggested a less restrictive airflow filter. He said Imagine running a marathon while wearing a gas mask, thats what your HVAC system has been trying to do. Overall, while im sure the product they made was well, its not good for my HVAC system.

> 3 dayI ordered the two pack of the 20x20x1 Filtrete Allergen Defense Odor Reduction Filters. The odor eating air cleaning action of charcoal is magic, and its natural and healthy! When I saw Filtrete went and added it to their HVAC filters and realized they are very close in price to the same filters without it, I knew this was for me. I really notice these working when Im cooking. If the heat or AC (or even just the fan) is running, those cooking odors dont linger around. I imagine these would be excellent for any home that is smoked in, or has been in the past. In addition to the charcoal odor control, these filters provide allergen reduction with a 1200 micro-particle performance rating. Since I began using these filters I have noticed a reduction in my allergy symptoms. I have since stopped taking allergy pills daily and only take them a couple times a week now. I hope these last for 3 months each. This is really dependent on your home, how much dust you have, and how often you are running your heat or AC, etc. Note that doing things such as smoking, burning incense or candles, using your fireplace or doing construction or remodeling will reduce the lifetime of the filter and require it to be replaced more often. At $32 for two, a $64 annual expense to keep your home clean and odor free, as well as to keep your furnace running smoothly and avoid costly repair fees is definitely a good deal. You do not want your furnace intake to be restricted by a dirty filter. FYI on filter replacement: I suggest that in a new home, you check your furnace filter monthly. After time you can extend the time between filter checks to two months, and if they are still looking pretty good, move up to 3 months. (you should replace it at 3 months, set a reminder on your phone) At the VERY LEAST, you need to replace your filter in Spring and again in the Fall. This is easy to remember, if you are changing from AC to heat, change the filter. If you are changing from heat to AC, change your filter. Installation: Furnace filter installation depends on your furnace, but has been a very easy process on every furnace I have ever had in my lifetime. In most cases you simply slide open a door, pull out the old filter and stick the new one in. It is important to note the air flow direction of the filter and furnace when installing and make sure you have the filter facing the correct direction. Note that there is an arrow printed on the filter showing the correct air flow direction.

Greater than one weekNeeded a good heavy duty filter with a higher rating and odor control for the house. Filtrete cost a bit more but they are always worth it. These are pulling the pollen out of the air, cat hair, dust, and everything else thats floating around. Plus theyre helping reduce that old house smell. If youve got allergies or just strange smells in your home, these will help you breathe a bit better. I have to change them before 90 days, but my house is older and a few air gaps scattered about. Still a good value for the money, quality, and life span.
