They are air filters, they filter the air as advertised. Not so sure about any odor control as the carbon is sprinkled on discharge side like pixie dust. IMO like expecting the same type of coating with large granules of sugar to make the air sweet.

As comments have stated it is true, some of the charcoal is visible on the packaging. It does fall off but I gave it a good shake before replacement. After 48-72 hours I noticed a very significant change in odor upon returning home. Before there was lingering but its gone. With proper cleaning on my side as well. Would recommend. If you have cats or dogs then highly recommend vacuuming well before replacing filter. Well wishes.

I have not noticed any difference odor-wise between these and be standard allergy filters. So not worth the extra money (it does a good job as a filter though!)

I have severe allergies & asthma. I can tell a huge difference when I use these compared to the lower MPR ones. I never in my life imagined not buying the cheapest sir filters but here I am... I cant recommend these enough! If you have any breathing problems, trust me, you need these things!

This is a very good filter, but after one month of use, I dont notice a difference compared to the Filtrete 1900 filter. Since I purchased my house in May 2015, cigarette smoke seepage from neighbors has been a daily and nightly problem. In addition to expensive ventilation renovations (all duct work replaced, baseboard sealant after installation of energy recovery ventilation [ERV] system to correct low airflow, Whispure air purifier running 24/7), I tried 3 types of filters at the return. The first was a washable filter that was convenient but mostly only caught dust bunnies. The Filtrete 1900 performed better for smoke and dust (esp. noticeable on my textured ceilings) and was labeled for smoke filtration. This charcoal version is a good concept, but without a noticeably better effect and because other customers mentioned that charcoal residue might fall into ducts, Im not sure if Ill purchase it again. The charcoal version is about $5 cheaper per filter than the Filtrete 1900, which is a plus. Ill probably alternate between the charcoal and 1900 filters in the future since they each have advantages.

DO NOT USE THESE! Within a week of installing we began to have serious issues with our HVAC unit & water began leaking from the ceiling into our drywall. The black carbon pieces are NOT secure at all and clogged up the condensate. It had to be flushed/maintenanced twice to clear it fully. This should not be on the market.
