    Update 03.27.17 From 5 stars to 1 star and now at 4stars. After the fix provided by Customer Service all seems well but time will tell. The Fix: You can download the upgrade tool here: http://static.tp-link.com/iotUpgradeTool_V1.0.zip Please note the upgrade tool is currently compatible with Windows systems only, and the computer must be on the same network as the smart device(s). After downloading the tool, extract the compressed folder using a decompression utility such as 7zip or WinRAR, and run the main executable file. Please allow firewall access if prompted by Windows. Once the program is open, click Scan, then select the smart device you want to update, and click Upgrade. If you have more than one smart device that needs updating, simply repeat these steps for each one. Once the update is completed, your smart device may need to be re-configured. If so, please use the Kasa app to re-configure the smart device. Update 03.20.17 Worst purchase ever from Tp-Link besides the new smart bulls. They are both horrible if you lose service for more than a few hours. I had to have my modem/router replaced and once all was said and done all of my original smart plugs were back online and communicating with Echo. However, after several resets, following Tp-Links instructions, my three (3) smart bulbs and my one (1) mini smart plug are still not responsive. Well, not entirely true, they are responsive after the initial reset but if I turn my phone off or leave the house, nothing. Of course they are visible on the app but unreachable. The smaller size of the new smart plugs is great but they are not worth the hassle. If this was a one-time thing maybe but I happened to live in an area that losing power for hours if not days during storms and I can’t see going through this frustration after each incident. For now I am only out a little over $100 and I am thankful this happened now before invested any more money in these products. The convenience of the smaller sized of the mini plugs and the no plug needed bulbs was sop great I naturally wanted more of them. Now, if youre wondering why my others devices worked with my new router instantly, the cable guy replaced the name or something on the new router with the name and password of my old router so I wouldnt have to reset everything. He did mention if I had a hub I would only have to redo the hub but that would still leave all of other devices, i.e. echoes, dot, thermostat, Kuna lights and everything else that runs off Wi-Fi. I know this review has crossed over between the mini plugs and the smart bulbs but since they responded the same way to my outage I thought it appropriate. However, I will be updating my review for the bulbs as well if I left one if not, I will be leaving one. I love these plugs. Set up was easy. I ordered one, then two, and now I am on my third. Having the app is great and the ability to work around my scheduled settings has proven to be a much needed asset. Im sure there may be at least one more in my future, maybe two :). And how could I forget to mention these plugs work with my Echo, even better. My house may be old but she is smart!

    Oh my god, it was like buttah! setting the TP-Link up with the Amazon Echo. Thank you so much TP-Link Support for responding to another persons review, because that made me more inclined to purchase this! I along with my mother - who is on the other side of Texas - have been having weird problems with the Wemo plug and Echo, where it only works when it wants to. The times you need the Wemo, it wouldnt work and I would have to go into the Alex app and have to discover the Wemo plug again - it wouldnt be discovered if I simply asked Alexa to do it. Seems that that lots of people started having this problem starting @ 4-6 weeks ago. So the TP-Link was at the top of my list, but I didnt know if it worked with the Amazon Echo. After seeing a reply from TP-Link support regarding the echo and saying it now works, I thought I would give it a try. I set up the TP-Link Kasa for iPhone on my iPad, signed up, followed instructions, and the app itself was breeze - especially compared to the Wemo app. Remeber, you have to start in the TP-Link Kasa app and be signed in. Follow instructions. When it tells you to leave the app, that means that you then go to your settings for wifi and then select the TP-Link device as your wifi. Then, go back to the TP-Link Kasa app to finish. After you are done in the Kasa app, go into the Alexa app. In the Alexa App, go to the menu and select Smart Home, then go to Device Links - find and select Link with TP-Link Kasa. This will bring up a menu where you put in your TP-Link Kasa email & password. When you are done with that, go back to Smart Home in the Alexa app, then Devices, where you will then select Discover Devices. Let Alexa discover the TP-Link and Viola, youre done!!!

    I finally pulled the trigger this Prime Day and bought three of these TP Link Wi-Fi switchable plugs while on super sale. One controls two lights in my living room which I have linked to my Amazon Alexa account. A simple Alexa, turn on [off] my lights and it works great. The second plug controls my stereo power, and works great with my Alexa Dot which is connected to my stereo receiver through a mini 3.5mm stereo to RCA plug. Now, I have voice and smartphone control over my stereo, and can play Pandora and other streaming services hands free on my stereo s connected speakers. Great to be able to control song selections and volume (using the Alexa App) for my rear yard speakers while standing in the rear yard. Very impressed with the TP Link switches, and note that when my wireless router goes down, the switches automatically reconnect within a minute or two (sadly, I have yet to get my Echos to automatically reconnect, yet). Only problem I had was setting up the first switch - the new Kasa account I established was not recognized, and there were no clear instructions either that came with the unit, or on their website. Customer service was non-existent - took two days for my emailed help request to be acknowledged. Anyway, eventually I figured out to remove the switch name from the app, and re-installed and renamed it, and the switch worked the second time. Time will tell if these expensive gadgets hold up, but theyre working great so far! Oh, and the App (Kasa) allows one to set up timer-style programs, so my lights come on at 7pm and go off at 1am, unless I ask Alexa to override. You can also activate all your switches remotely using the Kasa App provided you have wifi or cellular access. Great stuff! Time to freak out the babysitter, heh heh!

    Love this for use at home or traveling. I primarily use these smart plugs for lamps also for some kitchen appliances. It makes it easy to turn off lights if I forget and I am in a different part of the house using Alexa or set the coffee pot up and set the smart plug to turn it on in the morning. I can also turn lights on and off when I am away or from home using the Kasa app and check to make sure the coffee pot is off. TP-Link has a section on how to connect your smart plug and use it with Amazon Echo. It requires downloading and using the Kasa app and it is easy if you follow the directions posted on their website. You can name each plug so that you know where and what it controls this is especially helpful if you are using it for a lamp. The Kasa app also has a feature to randomly turn on your lights when you are traveling and it works well. I had neighbors express surprise that I was not home when I used this feature while traveling. These work well I had one smart plug lose the connection I reinstalled it and no more issues. Nothing works perfectly but this has worked well and as expected since I purchased and installed them. The information on TP-Links website is a big help with setup and to learn how to use this with Echo. A useful item that makes things a bit easier for busy people.

    I have three of these HS100 smart plugs and the first two worked fine for turning on/off lights at night, holiday lights and such. They are relatively easy to set up and work with Alexa devices (after additional set up). A minor issue is that they are quite large and can take up a lot of space on an outlet. You can really only plug them into one of the outlets or they will end up blocking both. A bigger issue is with the third plug I purchased. It set-up fine but it will not stop supplying power. It appears to work fine (power light goes on and off either by button on plug or using the app) but even with the power light out it continues to supply power. Based on some online research, this appears to be due to a bad relay switch that is stuck in the closed position. I did not pull this out of the box until I was already passed the Amazon return window so I am dealing with the manufacturer. They responded to my issue by email in a timely manner but gave me a list of so many troubleshooting items and information required (most of which is written in micro-text on the plug) that I can see getting a replacement is going to be quite a pain. I think this is a decent product when it works but it should not be that difficult to quality control for something like this. Luckily it was a great deal on Prime Day so I guess I am not out of too large an investment.

    As with nearly every Amazon purchase Ive made, this arrived timely. I was able to install the Kasa app on my Samsung Galaxy S5 without any trouble, but activating the plug wasnt frustration-free. Following the instructions on my Samsung, I was able to complete all but the last installation step. After three unsuccessful attempts to connect the plug, I contacted customer service. The recording assured me I was number one in line for a representative but I still waited a few moments for someone to speak with me. I clearly explained my difficulty (unable to connect to Wi-Fi) and the steps Id taken. The rep asked me to reset the plug, and then I was met with silence. After six minutes, I disconnected and called back (hallelujah! I was number one in line again!), and repeated what had happened on my first call. The rep dug through some instruction sheets, had me repeat the same steps for the fourth time, then said that my best option was to return the plug for a replacement. I persisted on my own and found a tip: link the smart plug while its in an outlet near your Wi-Fi router, then move it to your desired location. I did that, and voila! installation complete. Next step: go into the Alexa app, select Smart Home and then your device links and enable the plug. No problems there, either. Absolutely yes, it works with the Echo device. So why four stars and not five? First, customer service was not helpful. I easily found the tip that resulted in success, it seems that customer service could have done the same instead of suggesting I exchange the plug. And second, regardless of the March 10 comment from Kasa (see Earthlings review), the smart plug DOES block the second outlet. As much as Id enjoy having the majority of my electrical devices on a smart plug, I dont like the idea of blocking two outlets with one device.

    UPDATE: Because I liked the Smart Plug so much, I decided to buy the smaller TP-Link Smart Plug Mini and love it even more. The mini works just like the standard sized Smart Plug and uses the same app, but the smaller size allows you to access both of your outlet plugs without it blocking anything. You can plug in two Smart Plug Minis into the same outlet! Although its a little more pricey, its well worth the cost. The TP-Link Smart Plug: so good that I ordered a second unit a day later. After receiving an Echo Dot for Christmas, the family and I have been enjoying the many perks Alexa has - voice commanded music, daily weather and news updates, sport score updates, timers that could be set that didnt require me to wash my food prep messy hands...the list goes on. I was fortunate enough to get one Alexa enabled light bulb as a gift as well, but really didnt want to buy more bulbs since I knew once the bulb burned out that it was done. Enter the TP-Link Plug. This unit makes any three pronged outlet one that is Alexa enabled. Anything that can be plugged in can be used with this outlet, but must be able to stay in the on position. For those with newer televisions that will receive power, but not actually turn on when initially plugged in, this wont work for you. This also applies to coffee makers, toaster ovens, and so forth that require you to actually turn it on and cannot stay in a perpetual on position. I used my TP-Link as a switch for a lamp thats in a difficult to access corner of my house. Once the lamp was switched in the on position, it would go on and off depending on whether I commanded Alexa to turn the outlet on or off. In addition to being Alexa enabled, this switch can also be remotely controlled by your cell phone/tablet using the Kasa app. This is really useful when working late - I can turn on my lights on the drive home from work so my house wont be dark when I walk inside. This app also enables me to set my lights on using away timers while Im on vacation. For those who have multiple TP-Link products, you can make customized settings for turning on/off devices in the morning, the evening, for movie nights, and so forth. You can set schedules, on/off timer, and see how long youve left your devices plugged in and running. Installation takes less than five minutes - simply plug the unit in, download and install the Kasa App, then follow the directions on the app to connect to your wifi. Overall, this is a cost effective and clever unit to use if youre looking to control your electric and electronic devices from afar, whether using Alexa or your phone.

    One of my smartest purchases ever. I bought my first HS100 around Thanksgiving 2017. I got two for $5 each, as bundles with my Echo and Echo Dot. I just added a 3rd (an HS110) for under $20. They are a breeze to set up. just plug in and wait for the light to go from amber to green. Go to setting on your phone and join the TP Kaza wifi (temporary for the setup), and let it prompt you to connect to your home wifi. From there, use the phone app to manage the devices, create schedules, groups of devices, and of course, turn things on or off with Alexa. You can use the Kaza app to set up schedules. I use these on lamps and the Christmas tree, etc. One great thing - these are actually smart - they know if they are off or on. This differs from a simple time which just turns itself back and forth to on and off, without controlling the actual flow of electricity to the timer. The Kasaoutlet knows if it is on or off, so for example if you ask Alexa to turn off the lamp and the Kasa outlet is already off, it will do nothing. You wont get out of sync with on being off and off being on. Scheduling is a breeze, and much easier to do from a smartphone than having to go to an outlet timer, bend down, play with settings, etc. You can schedule on and off functions individual on different days, or set a timer to turn off in say 30 minutes, or set an away schedule to randomly turn lights on to give the appearance you are home. Of course, you can use the app to turn things on and off when you are away from home too. You can also override the schedule with simple commands like Alexa turn on the den lamp. If you prefer a smaller plug, TP-Link does make a smaller version. Coverage seems very good. I have some of these on different floors than my router, and about 60-70 feet away with no issue at all. A couple of notes: 1. These are good size, so in a duplex outlet it is bets to plug it in the top outlet so the bottom outlet remains accessible. I see people complain that the Kasa blocks the whole duplex outlet. I guess it could in some cases, depending how your outlet is mounted, or it what you want to plug into the other outlet is large. In general though, plug into the top outlet on a duplex, and you are good to go. 2. These are grounded and have 3 prongs so if you have an old style outlet, thats an issue. The HS110 comes with energy monitoring which the HS100 does not. The HS100 still shows you hours of usage, averages, etc.so I would go with whichever is the best price on the day you buy it.

    I have been using this product after experiencing a lot of difficulty with a competitors product. I started with one basic, over sized switch and was impressed with its ease of setup and use as well as the features for the price. I then added a wall switch (great price for a similarity easy to use and function product), and then a mini switch. The mini was where I had issues, but I think they are easily resolved. More on that in a moment. I also tried the over sized energy monitoring switch and it worked great as well. Easy setup and easy to use, with a basic set of features I would expect for the price. So for the minis. I tried one and had the same 24 hour reset issue several people are noting. I thought maybe it was a bad switch, so I tried two more since I have been automating my home anyway. Same issue. I contacted customer support and they provided me a quick tool to upgrade the firmware. After completing that step (and upgrading my router, which was a separate issue that most will not experience if you only have a couple devices on your network), the issue appears to be resolved. I would recommend that if you have an issue with the switch dropping off the network, get the tool to upgrade the firmware to at least 1.0.0 or higher (all my switches that were working originally were 1.0.0 or higher, all the minis were less than 1.0.0). Now I have no issues. I think if you have more than say 15-20 devices on your network and your relying on the standard cable company modem/router, you may need to look into upgrading. I started having a lot of issues with devices on my network with my cable company provided equipment past about 20 devices (cable company said really 16 is the max), but now that I have upgraded (in addition to the firmware fix), everything is running very smoothly. Four stars because I think this switch should have some sort of energy monitoring for the price, but the ease of use and functionality still makes it worth purchasing. I have purchases several more.

    The TP-Link Smart Plug is a good product. It works well, and was easy to set up. TP-Link smart plugs are also 100% compatible with Google Home (Yes, I know most here probably use Echo. It works with it too!) The only drawback of this product is its size. This thing is BULKY, and on a powerstrip will likely take up the space of two outlets. If you have the space to spare, not a big deal. If space is a concern Id say go with the TP-Link mini. Youll spend a little more, but the space saving will be worth it. Im using one on my air conditioner which is amazing! At home I can say Hey Google, turn on the air conditioner and she does it. Out of the home, I can use the TP-Link Kasa app on my phone to turn the unit on or off. OR I can set up an IFTTT action to turn the AC on when I am within a predefined radius of my home. Welcome to the future, and for the price? Holy cow! You need this in your life. Oh, one last thing. Dont make my mistake. I bought two of these. One was going to control my TV. Learned quick that turning off a smart tv and powering off a smart tv are two very different things. Basically, if I use the plug, I have to wait for my TV to reboot every time I turn it back on. Dont buy one of these for your television.
