Ive always been more of a speaker person ive built several generations of speakers ranging from fountek dayton audio in earlier designs to a current high end design using an Aurum Cantus G1 tweeter $600Pr and a Morel TSCM634 Mid bass $800Pr powered by emotiva amplifers and an analog active crossover network. These headphones are on par with the speakers ive built. Im currently driving them with an emotiva basx a100 amp that i also use for my speakers and a few different DACs like a HRT music streamer 2+ and a SMSL M8 $250. While they took many hours to property burn in the sound is excellent bass midrange treble its all there and unlike a lot of headphones the imaging on these is on par with the speakers ive built. Ive owned a pair of ATH M50x headphones before and these are an excellent upgrade. I would recommend you spend a fair amount on a good DAC/AMP to get the full experience theses headphones can provide. They are sensitive enough to be driven by lower power amplifiers but you wont get the full experience without better gear to drive them. I used the emotiva a100 because i used it to drive my speakers before and used the dacs i had because ive also used them on my speaker system but you can probably use cheaper gear with good results.

After spending the last few months with these headphones I figured I should leave some feedback, considering how much more I enjoy listening to music now. I can say for certain that I wish that I had these during my years studying music in college as they would have made the experience that much more enjoyable. These headphones bring out all the detail I had been missing with home listening in the past and it really lets you experience albums as they are meant to be experienced. That being said these are not the headphones for you if you will be listening in a loud environment, require no sound leakage, or will be traveling a lot. Also, you will need to by a decent headphone amplifier if you wish to make them really shine. While listening to bad albums you will be annoyed but try putting on some Thriller by Jackson and you will be wanting to dance right away. The bass is superb, the highs are clear, but not piercing, and the mid range is full and velvety. If you love music, you want the HD 650s.

Avant de vous livrer mon évaluation, je voudrais, pour tordre le cou à une idée reçue, vous raconter un peu lhistoire de lachat de ce casque. Je cherchais un remplaçant à mon (très) vieux HD 540 qui tombait en ruines après près de 20 ans de bons et loyaux services et, je métais tout dabord intéressé, tout naturellement au HD 650 qui semblait le successeur tout désigné. Seul hic, tous les tests en ligne le décrivaient comme, certes, très bon, mais aussi très difficile à alimenter. On soulignait partout la nécessité absolue dutiliser un ampli casque, et pas du bas de gamme, ce qui aurait rallongé la facture de quelques centaines dEuros. Précisons que jhabite une ville moyenne ou il est rigoureusement impossible découter un casque hi-fi digne de ce nom.

These are the best headphones Ive ever listened-to. And Ive tried some horrendously expensive (and over-hyped) types in recent years. The experience with the HD650s is as close as Ive been able to get to listening to the best studio monitor speakers in a proper acoustic environment - but with the bonus that the sound is between your ears rather than in front of them! Worth every penny.
