I decided to let my son have this one, as he is always looking for faster times on his drive especially for gaming. So, here is his review: Before I begin, I need to clarify that this product is not for personal desktops. It is for NAS, aka Network Array Storage. Can you use it on a desktop? Sure, but that’s the equivalent of using a bugatti for your work commute, overkill. It’s an ssd used for servers, so it is made to retain it’s read/write speed under high loads. Does the average person need this sort of power? No. But it’s definitely better than any normal SSD, and storage is storage, so I used it anyway on my desktop. And let me tell you, it’s good. Pros: It’s an SSD (I won’t explain in full detail because anyone considering a NAS ssd should already have a basic understanding of how SSDs are superior to hard drives, but here’s my comparison: Hard drive = 2001 honda civic SSD = 2020 tesla roadster (SSDs are fast as hell) It can perform without throttling. While under high loads, it doesn’t throttle. A problem with normal SSDs (and any hard drive because hard drives are garbage) is that at maximum performance, they slow down. This SSD? It doesn’t slow down. It’s good. It’s overkill, it’s just really damn good, I don’t have a server to test the full potential but from a gaming standpoint it’s good. Price: Yes it’s at a higher price point than normal SSDs, but it’s not intended for desktop computers: it’s like using a bugatti for your work commute, it’s nice but definitely overkill, but still nice Fast, 434 megabytes per second fast. Cons: None It’s good. It’s great! It’s overkill for desktop use but nobody is going to stop me. It’s beefy, it’ll be good for NAS/server setups, it doesn’t throttle, it’s good. But if you need an SSD for gaming, get a WD blue, this is totally overkill, it’s too good and no gamer can use it to its full potential.

Failed after 9 months in a moderate-use Synology fileserver used as a write cache - due to wearout. Probably a fine drive for a home user, but dont sell it for NAS use if it cant even last a year in a NAS.

Bough this to replace a Seagate SSD that failed after 14 days. Performance is great lets see how long it last.

This was really easy to install. Yes, I am an IT guy and used other 3rd-party software to clone the smaller SSD to this larger, 1TB version. Took less than 30 minutes to do this! Gotta love living in 2020! :-D

**Please note that the picture of the speed test is done in an external enclosure over USB 3.0 and doesnt reflect what speeds you would see if it was directly mounted in your pc or laptop** Unfortunately I dont have a NAS to test this out on, so I decided to use it for an External drive for all my video and drone footage, where I am constantly transferring 1gb-4gb files and being that its a NAS drive, editing straight off the drive shouldnt be a problem. Which it isnt, I sometimes hit a small bit of lag but for the most part its been a breeze. Now, when I am home I just offload to my workstation so there is no problem there. When transferring all my files at once I usually see about 250-275MB/s while transferring a mixed load. As far as temperatures go, I dont really get much of an increase on single files, but I transferred a 10gb file back and forth about 5 times and seen an increase of about 10c. Overall I am pleased with the drive. Its no NVME, but it also doesnt carry the price of one either. WD has been a trusted name in the industry for decades now and I have no doubt that this drive will hold up over time. Just make sure to keep the temperatures down. Side Note: If you use this in an external enclosure I dont think I would go with a metal cased one, unless its heatsinked. While testing I noticed even after the tests were done the temperature of the drive was still elevated in the software. So I touched the enclosure and sure enough it was still pretty warm. When I opened the case and felt the drive, it was cool to the touch. I believe that because the case is metal, it absorbed all the heat but wasnt dissipating it, heating the air inside and keeping the temperature reading higher than it really was. Answering the unanswered as there are so many forums where this question remains open. I can confirm that the WD RED SSD NAS 1TB (using a 2.5 to 3.5 cheapo chunky-style adapter) totally works in both the MyCloud EX2 and MyCloud EX2 Ultra dual-bay NAS devices. I tried JBOD, Spanning, RAID0, RAID1 and all are functioning as expected depending on your configuration choice. For my final configuration, I am personally using two WD RED SSD NAS 1TB in RAID0 for added performance and then use rotating USB HDD backups for any potential failure/recoveries that might happen. As an aside, I experimented with other brands of SSD without success. If you really want SSDs in your MyCloud EX2 or EX2 Ultra, then Id recommend you get the official WD RED SSD NAS drives as they are the only SSDs I personally found to work.

Amazon and Western Digital will only warranty for 30 days. I received 5 units and 2 of them didnt work and they wont replace because it was 35 days before we tried to use them. The package was melted.
