My situation: Years ago, I had a 14 inch flood in my finished basement. Now, I have 2 sump pits. The one in the front of the basement runs less often but I still need to know what is going on. The one in the back of the basement has high volumes of water. I have 2 1/2 horsepower Zoeller pumps. I recently replaced both Zoeller pumps. The float switches last around 10 years. But as I started to examine the conditions in the basement, I realized that I would like a little more protection and I wanted to have a better understanding of what exactly is going on down there. So, I read about this PumpSpy Smart Outlet and realized that it could be a nice addition to my system. So, I bought 2 of them. Installation: Basically, you plug in the PumpSpy Smart Outlet into an existing outlet and male pump plug into the top female receptacle on the PumpSpy Outlet. It lights up in Yellow for set-up mode. Then you download the PumpSpy Android app onto your phone, connect it to your wireless network, add the location, add the device, and once it is online the top outlet will be a green light. Not terribly difficult to set-up but you will need to follow the instructions. Results: The Android app allows me to see how frequently the pumps run, how long the pumps run in each cycle, and the approximate gallons pumped. Now I know exactly what is going on down there with the pumps. Very nice. The best feature is that you can add your cell phone number to the PumpSpy Android App and you can receive text message alerts if anything is going wrong. If your internet goes down, you will get a text message. Most importantly, if the power goes out, you will get a text message as well. This is perfect for my situation since a power outage could lead to a massive flood in a bad storm. I also invested in the PumpSpy Battery Backup solution for the front of the basement which works off of the cellular network (not wireless). I will be adding a third Zoeller pump and it will also be using a PumpSpy Smart Outlet. How my system will work? The power goes out, I get a text message from PumpSpy. In a rain storm, the battery backup systems will last for 5-10 hours. I am installing a back-up generator, an inlet on the outside of my house, and an interlock device on my electrical panel. I get home and fire up the generator and my basement stays dry. The PumpSpy Smart Outlets are an integral part of my system that will allow me to make decisions based on the weather conditions. Love this product. UPDATE: i received a text message tonight from the PumpSpy Outlet: Excessive Motor Runtime. I checked the app and it looks like the pump motor was running continuously. Checked the pumps and the main pump was running but the water was NOT pumping out of the pit. I unplugged the main pump, checked outside and it turns out that the discharge pipe froze. I cut the excess pipe and used a heat gun to melt the ice inside the pipe. Plugged in the main pump and then it pumped and drained the pit. The PumpSpy App text message feature probably just saved me $300 because I never would have known that the pump was running continuously and it would have burned up eventually.

All wifi connected devices have occasional connectivity issues. It just goes with the territory. My house doesn’t need a sump pump, but I have recommended the PumpSpy to three friends over the past few years who all love them. One friend contacted me recently saying his unit had disconnected from wifi and he couldn’t get it to reconnect. I tried to get him set back up but was also unsuccessful. I was starting to second guess my decision to recommend he get one, but had him contact PumpSpy hoping they would help. To my surprised they were easy to contact, called him within a day and had him re-connected quickly. I will continue to recommend PumpSpy and will be installing one in the new house I’m building.

I would have given this product 5 stars because I love it but the app stalls and you get the wheel spinning every time you bring it up without shutting the app down. I have to shut the app down and restart it and it works fine The data from the app is accurate and amazing .Hope there is an update as this feels like a easy bug to resolve bug

The Pump Spy is excellent at monitoring the water level and run times/frequency of the sump pump. Notifications can be set up and work as expected. Great to be able to see how many times the pump runs each day and of course if there is a power outage. We had a basement flood due to a sump pump failure and this product provides extra peace of mind. App/website are not the flashiest but they provide the data required and no issue with functionality. With heavy rains, I need to know if I have sump pump issues as basement can flood. I have a back up pump, connected into a different power circuit in case the original circuit trips and I have a back up generator. Support is above and beyond the best! Email support helped me on a Saturday afternoon and during Sunday to get it working. Best Support EVER!! I love this device and am now recommending to all my friends and work groups.

5/19/23 Update - Posting an update to my original review below. After months of troubleshooting and communication with tech support, unit is now working. The issue was that my AT&T Smart Home Manager app was blocking outbound traffic on port 8081 (although it was not clearly telling me that) which the PumpSpy outlet uses. Note that the Outlet indicates red status if there is a problem connecting to WiFi or contacting the PumpSpy server. The Setup App implies (although not totally clear) that Red means there is an issue connecting to WiFi. I suggested to tech support to update their documentation to state that they use port 8081 to help others with troubleshooting. Although sporadic at times, PumpSpy tech support stayed in contact with me for over 6 months trying to figure out what the problem was. They also sent me a newer version of the outlet at no charge. So I really felt like they were standing behind their product and trying to make it right. For anyone who is shopping around, what I believe makes this product unique are the combination of 3 things: 1) Does not charge for monthly monitoring 2) Is not integrated into the pump itself (while this reduces the ability to monitor pump health, in makes for easy installation and compatibility across all pumps) 3) does not have shut off circuitry (some products have a built-in switch to kill the power remotely, but if that switch fails your pump loses power). There are still some issues with the app, which is why I rated at 4 stars instead of 5. Ive passed the details to tech support, and I know they have looked at them. Hoping at some point I will see an update to the app the addresses the issues. If that happens, will change my rating to 5 stars. ********************************************************************************************************************** I previously owned a pump spy outlet that, while a little quirky at times, seemed to operate fairly reliably for several years. Eventually it lost connection to the WiFi network, and despite hours and hours of troubleshooting, not only could I not get it to reconnect, I could not even get it to enter setup mode. The setup button would stick sometimes as well, so I finally concluded that there was probably a short or open on the circuit board, and it was a lost cause. Since it worked well for several years, I decided to purchase another one. The new one easily went into setup mode, but every time it would connect to the WiFi network, it turned the status to red (nonfunctional). I am fairly tech savvy, so I was confident I wasnt making some type of basic mistake. I could see from my router device list, it was connected to my WiFi network, but it always stayed in the red status. I tried using both IOS and Android devices, with no success. I tried all the different setup alternatives in the instructions including some other instructions tech support sent me. Every time, same result. I finally returned it for a replacement, and the replacement had the exact same problem (I was expecting it would but needed to rule out any issues specific to the prior unit). I reached out to tech support several times. Got a couple responses, but after I explained all the troubleshooting I had already done, they went radio silent. Technical details on how the system is designed are pretty sparse. I assume my issue is one or a combination of the following items: 1) firewall preventing unit from contacting PumpSpy server, handshake problem between outlet and Pumpspy server, and/or compatibly with the PumpSpy client. Having had good success with this unit in the past, I really wanted it to work. I offered to troubleshoot anything they wanted in hopes that would lead to a client or firmware update that would resolve the issue, but like I said after a few email exchanges, they stopped communicated. I suspect this is a small company with a small engineering staff and theyve probably had some turnover and lost some of the secret sauce. Just my speculation, but in the absence of communication all I can do is speculate. Kudos to Amazon for quickly sending me a replacement, and taking both units back for a full refund. I have no reason to believe these units are broken. All indications are they have a design flaw.

For better or worse, I dont take the time to write many reviews. With this item, I could not help myself. We moved into a house with a sump pump three years ago. In over 50 years I had never lived in a house with a sump pit and found that I was obsessed with the operation of our sump pump for the first couple of years in the house. I bought water sensors, paid for sump pump flood insurance and laid awake at night listening for it to engage and had neighbors checking our house every other day when we were out of town -- all because I was so worried about flooding ruining our partially finished basement walkout. After the first pump (installed by our builder during construction) failed after 18 months - which I didnt discover for two days (and the pump ran for an hour to clear the backed up water), I became convinced I needed a back up. A plumber recommended two pumps at different levels rather than a battery backup (water backup not an option as we are on well). I found this item while researching battery backups and thought it would be of benefit -- it turned out to be perfect. It was no issue to install and now I can check on the status anytime I want, and will get a notification if the power goes out (if it doesnt report to the server) or if the water reaches the level of the wire sensor in the pit. I honestly started sleeping through the night after installing this - and leave without worry now. Yes it is a bit pricey but includes the lifetime monitoring - so no monthly fee. The only downside I see at all is that if the company were to go out of business, the monitoring ends, and therefore the usefulness of the product. Hopefully PumpSpy will be in business for many years to come. . . This really is a five star product in my book.

The device itself seems to be working, hence my 4-star rating. If I had to rate the Android app and the installation process, I would give it zero stars. The app repeatedly asks for login (unlike other apps that remember you), and then churns and churns for random periods of time. Then it shows a black screen for another random period before showing the home screen. It also freezes at various other times during use. This is the first app Ive encountered that does not recognize the phones Back button as the equivalent of the Back function of the app. Instead, if you touch the Back button at the bottom of the phone, it throws you out and you have to log in again, and there goes several more minutes... The installation is also made hard by the fact that your phone must connect to the PumpSpy devices local wifi network (activated by pushing the button on the front of the device) to tell it how to connect to broadband via your homes wifi network; however, while your phone is connected to the device, you cannot create or log into a PumpSpy cloud account because your phone is not connected to broadband. Confused yet? Anyhow, after some effort, it all worked out and hopefully I will never have to do it again.

Bad. Support was so so. Worked for seven months, then quit.

I walked into this purchase with a full expectation that it could be a total miss. Connecting the unit and securing it was super straight forward. I see not issues with that part if you have the space for this device. As a network engineer getting it connected to Wifi was more complicated, not because it wasnt simple enough, but because the Android App just kept spinning during Wifi Setup. My solution was to grab my wifes iPhone and do the setup from the Apple app. This was a much smoother experience so Android users take note. I have no experience with the iPhone app after that point and I dont think my wife looks at it at all. The Android app however is a bit hit or miss. It worked fine for a few months and then one day it just stopped working after a notification that it lost wifi connection. Opening up the app each time caused it to crash over and over and over. The only thing that fixed it was to clear the cache and data on the app and then login to it. Doing this does not delete the historical data which is nice. In the end free lifetime app support is a trade off for some frustrating elements.

Several problems installing & using. Still deciding whether I want to return it. Requires an app on your phone to connect & use. The app is clunky. The one step to connect the pump spy to my home wi-fi turned out to be an hour long ordeal. Once connected, it worked for a couple weeks then stopped recording the activity of my sump pump (though it still seems to be able to report high water or loss of internet). Their tech support claims its because my wi-fi signal is too weak. Typical; blame the customer! I know thats not true because my smart TV is located nearby & it can stream movies & shows without a problem. Pump Spy tech support told me I should get a wi-fi repeater; everyone Ive talked to thats used one of these says its a bad idea because it slows down the internet for your whole house.
