This is my first soldering iron and it works really well. It heats up in like 15 seconds or so, and when Im done it stores away easily back into the original packaging. I think it probably would be annoying if you had to change your temperature a lot and do a ton of temperature adjustments, but I almost never change mine.

I have been using cheap soldering irons that are a pain in a$$ to use they dont stay hot enough to flow the solder. This hakko is amazing it heats to temp in less that 45 seconds and stays hot it is a pleasure to work with and I look forward to soldering now. I love this iron. I got mine from ness electronics as I know they have the real hakko and not the fake knock off

Im sure there are a lot of nit picking things for solder ninjas. And all of that seems totally legit. I admit that the accidental calibration issue is real - I did it and had to Google to find out how to reset (turn on while holding both buttons, then select U for the US). But - this review is not for solder ninjas - this review is for people like me. If you have a long history (and a drawer full) of crappy radio hut soldering irons - and have never been satisfied with your soldering experience - this iron will blow your mind. I agonized over spending this much for a soldering, but when I add up all my crappy ones, they were more than just getting a good one. It is super light, heats super fast, stays hot, and the tip is small enough for delicate work and powerful enough to easily solder heavy gauge RC battery wires. There are probably cheaper irons that are just as good for novices like me - but this thing is awesome.

This soldering iron is high quality and has sophisticated electronics to maintain temperature and reach the target temperature quickly when powered on. The stand that holds the iron is sturdy metal although the blue and yellow coloring makes it look like it could be plastic. With the free CHP170 cutters, worth about 8 dollars, this $93 unit cost about $85 itself, about the cost of the FX888 analog model with is now discontinued but still on sale for $80-83 all over the internet and Amazon, of course.. You can program up to 5 preset temperatures or simply change the temperature manually. Setup is easy, and also allows for a password to prevent unwanted use. The quality of this unit meets or exceeds other units I have used extensively, like Weller stations and Metcal towers. I opted for this unit over the Ayohue (sp?) which was less expensive but has a larger footprint despite using a similar wattage to the Hakko (75W). The Ayohue has an attached solder spool roller on the station itself, and these spools can be purchased separately, can be moved around the work area, for example, closer to the circuit board, to feed solder to the components as are they are installed or reworked. Separate solder spools are convenient, without the need to move the entire station, or pulling out long lengths of solder from the station to reach the work area, only to require winding the extra length of solder back onto the spool. Always tin your tips to prevent oxidation and prolong tip life. I do wish two accessories had been included, the rubber lip that is optional and can be used to wipe off excess solder off the tip, and also, a heat resistant pad to facilitate the changing of solder tips when they are still hot.

I know it looks like a Fisher-Price toy (My First Soldering Iron!), but it is a great replacement for my older broken Hakko. Very happy with it, though the temperature is more difficult to adjust than it ought to be.
