15-12-2024I use it still for many things like through hole soldering and connecting wires. However it is not suitable for microsoldering. I have advanced my skills enough to be able to do component level circuit board repair on things like laptops, and the heating accuracy and especially tip selection make it entirely unsuitable for that purpose. For most other type of work, you wont be able to find a better iron at a similar price.

> 3 dayI think anyone who enjoys soldering and certainly anyone who, for whatever reason, needs to but hates doing it, like myself, will find this an invaluable investment that is worth every cent and probably even at twice the price. A skill that has eluded me and always a source of frustration, which I would attempt only as a last resort. Recently I developed an interest in quadcopters, a hobby that involves not only a great deal of soldering, but requires a level of precision I had never considered nor desired attaining. However, the satisfaction the hobby brings me has driven me to aquire six different soldering irons / stations and many types of solder in my effort to become efficient. Many hours of practice and 2 ruined flight control boards had finally allowed me to overcome the dread associated with the skill. Still not satisfied with the equipment I was using, I researched what the best copter builders were using and quickly found this to be the overall favorite. The only regret I have regarding the purchase of this unit, is that I didnt do my homework sooner because the difference is night and day. I can only imagine the time and frustration I might have saved by buying this early on. Overnight I went from viewing soldering as an accepted means to an end, to actually looking forward to doing it and being proud of the results. Having this unit and a little practice, along with the basic fundamentals of soldering is all that one needs to avoid much aggravation.

Greater than one weekGreat soldering station but made way more complicated to operate than need be thanks to the improved digital version of the far more user friendly analog station it replaced. Plan on visiting YouTube if you want to know how to use it... the included manual is near useless without doing so.

> 3 dayGets up to temp very quickly. I like the very precise, very stable (digital) temperature control. Hakko is pretty much the standard brand w/ plenty of accessories. It would be nice if there was a caddy to allow this to be more portable - (making one myself). Best soldering station you can get for under $100. Nice.

> 3 dayI dont love a lot of products, theres usually too many annoying quirks for my low tolerance of quirks. But this gadget has really made my soldering experience much, much better. Iron heats quickly, has easy controls, nice cleaning accessories, long cables. Its great. I started on cheap Radio Shack pencils, moved up to $30 entry level stations, they never heated fast enough or apparently hot enough. Thus I was always holding the iron to the components way longer than I should have, often burning traces off PCBs. This iron is perfect, soldering is fast, stress free. Writing this review makes me want to go solder something, its a joy to use this. And Im going to enjoy being able to easily source tips when that day comes.

Greater than one weekThis is the best soldering iron I have ever owned. I have quite a few including a nicer Weller, but this takes the cake. It heats up quick, maintains temp, and actively shows what the temperature is. While it looks like plastic, the entire thing is metal and the stand is rather nice. This was well worth the investment.

> 3 dayWhen I received the Hakko FX888D soldering station, I immediately used it on a project that involved 220+ desoldering and 220+ soldering connections over a 3-day period. This soldering station worked wonderfully, coming up to precisely the temperature that I selected very quickly. The soldering station came packaged carefully from the manufacturer in a small cardbox box with an instruction manual that I would say is about a 7 on my scale of ease of understanding/clarity/accuracy. The mid-size, chisel tip that came with this soldering station worked very efficiently/very well for the non-surface mount soldering job I completed. The tips are very economical -- I was able to purchase separately on Amazon a combo package with 5 hakko tips in different sizes for this soldering station for about $20 -- thats just $4 per tip!!! (IN contrast, the Metcal tips I recently purchased for my office cost $20 a piece here on Amazon and over $30 a piece at a local store.) This Hakko soldering station seems to be as well built as the digital Welder and Metcal soldering stations I use at work, and it costs only a fraction of what those other brands cost. This is my first Hakko item, but I was so happy with the product, I ordered a bunch of other Hakko products for my office.
