Replaced my 18 year-old Weller, it was okay. This Hakko is really excellent. Heats quickly and easy to regulate. Hakko sounds like one of the Marx Brothers.

This soldering iron is high quality and has sophisticated electronics to maintain temperature and reach the target temperature quickly when powered on. The stand that holds the iron is sturdy metal although the blue and yellow coloring makes it look like it could be plastic. With the free CHP170 cutters, worth about 8 dollars, this $93 unit cost about $85 itself, about the cost of the FX888 analog model with is now discontinued but still on sale for $80-83 all over the internet and Amazon, of course.. You can program up to 5 preset temperatures or simply change the temperature manually. Setup is easy, and also allows for a password to prevent unwanted use. The quality of this unit meets or exceeds other units I have used extensively, like Weller stations and Metcal towers. I opted for this unit over the Ayohue (sp?) which was less expensive but has a larger footprint despite using a similar wattage to the Hakko (75W). The Ayohue has an attached solder spool roller on the station itself, and these spools can be purchased separately, can be moved around the work area, for example, closer to the circuit board, to feed solder to the components as are they are installed or reworked. Separate solder spools are convenient, without the need to move the entire station, or pulling out long lengths of solder from the station to reach the work area, only to require winding the extra length of solder back onto the spool. Always tin your tips to prevent oxidation and prolong tip life. I do wish two accessories had been included, the rubber lip that is optional and can be used to wipe off excess solder off the tip, and also, a heat resistant pad to facilitate the changing of solder tips when they are still hot.

Great soldering iron! And the bonus cutter is very sharp and sturdy as well. The iron can be set very hot and will melt solder instantly even for larger metal planes. I do highly suggest getting more solder tips because the one it comes with is pretty standard. For a more well rounded experience, I suggest a fatter one for large area solder points and a very fine tipped one for small or SMD components. The button interface takes a bit of reading the manual to understand but there are preset settings you can change as well as manual temperature control. The included stand is very sturdy and works well for cleaning the iron mid-use.

How can you argue with the best of the hobbyist level soldering guns? You cant, because this thing is just awesome. I could go into the details but youve read it all before, dont waste your money on other guns just to end up buying this one down the line. Go with the best and it will last forever, very much recommended and happy with this purchase.

Great station for the money. I havent put a lot of time on it yet, but it heats up REALLY quickly, holds temp well, and is comfortable to use. Programming is pretty easy if you read through the instructions.

i purchased this assuming that I was going to get the CHP170 cutter along with the Hakko FX888D. The Hakko came in fine and it works well but the CHP170 cutter was not sent as part of the packaging. Hence giving 3 stars. EDIT: The CHP cutter arrived 2 weeks later in a separate package. I appreciate that the seller has sent it. Hence raising stars to 4 instead of 3. Not giving 5 since it came 2 weeks later and I needed it earlier than that.
